DNH-3795 This massive and highly-desirable piece is the keystone of Reformation-related porcelain medallions and is prominently featured on page 96 of Hugo Schnell’s Martin Luther und die Reformation auf Münzen und Medaillen. (1983) Obverse: Portrait (left) of Luther with doctor’s cap. IN SILENCIO ET SPE ERIT FORTITVDO VESTRA [Isaiah 30:15]. These words from Isaiah are included in the famous 1529 portrait of Martin Luther by Cranach (Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan). Reverse: Wartburg landscape under Latin cross with rays. LUTHERISCHER WELTBUND 1952 / [Meissen Crossed Swords]. Unknown to Whiting; Schnell Table VIII (see also 549).
This piece is in outstanding condition. Gold paint is also in very good condtion. This is the rarest and most desirable of all versions of this Reformation medallion. Also produced in brown porcelain in this size (more common) and brown porcelain in a smaller size (most common).
